Flu is a viral infection which is spread through inhaling small droplets when someone nearby with the virus coughs or sneezes. People with diabetes, even when well-managed, are at high risk of serious flu complications. Pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus, and ear infections are some of the flu-related complications. The flu can worsen your diabetes as it puts your body in stress, which can affect your blood sugar levels, becoming harder to keep under good control. For sure, flu can raise the sugar levels, but also we need to keep in mind that depending on the diabetes treatment followed, people can get into low blood sugars, as they don’t have much appetite to eat their usual intake. 

When you have diabetes, prevent yourself from getting the flu. Everyone has a chance of catching the infection, but people with diabetes have a harder time fighting it off. It is very important to check your blood sugar levels every 3-4 hours while you are sick as you may notice changes in your blood sugar levels. The signs or symptoms of flu can mask the signs of high or low blood sugar.

Most diabetic people do not feel hungry or thirsty when they have a flu. But it is very important to continue eating a healthy balanced diet and drinking the required amount of fluid to help manage your blood sugar level. 

Flu vaccination is very important for people with diabetes as they are at high risk. Flu vaccines are updated every season to keep up with changing viruses. Also, immunity wears out over time; yearly vaccine is recommended for protection against the flu. Immunity from vaccination sets in after about two weeks and the vaccine has showed to reduce the risk of getting sick with flu or having a serious flu complication. It is associated with reduced hospitalizations among people with diabetes.
